data-start="6491" data-end="6525">Assessment of Bladder Emptying

Your doctor may assess whether urine remains in the bladder after urination.

This can be particularly important when recurrent infections occur together with weak flow, difficulty urinating, or a feeling of incomplete emptying.

Ultrasound or Other Imaging

Imaging is not automatically required for every patient.

However, it may be appropriate when there is suspicion of:

Kidney or urinary stones

<li data-section-id="1edhit6" automatically means that an antibiotic is required.

When a bacterial infection is diagnosed or strongly suspected, an appropriate antibiotic may be prescribed based on the clinical situation and, when appropriate, culture results.

The problem is self-prescribing antibiotics every time symptoms appear.

An antibiotic that worked during a previous infection may not be appropriate for the next episode.

Repeated unnecessary antibiotic use can also contribute to antimicrobial resistance.

The 2026 EAU guidelines continue to emphasize antimicrobial stewardship and appropriate diagnosis and treatment of urinary infections.

<h2 symptoms return after treatment, several possibilities should be considered.

The original infection may not have been completely eradicated, a new infection may have developed, or an underlying problem may still be present.

For example:

<p dir="auto" data-start="8064" depends largely on finding and treating the underlying cause.

General measures may include:

Drink adequate fluids unless your doctor has advised you to restrict fluids.

Do not regularly hold your urine for prolonged periods.

Follow your prescribed treatment exactly.

Avoid taking leftover antibiotics.

Investigate persistent urinary symptoms.

Treat prostate or bladder-emptying problems when present.

Follow up if symptoms return after treatment.

For men with recurrent UTI, however, lifestyle measures alone may not be enough if there is an underlying obstruction, prostate problem, stone, or bladder dysfunction.

The Most Important Point: Treat the Cause, Not Just the Infection

If you have had one UTI, your doctor can determine the appropriate treatment.

But if you keep getting UTIs, the strategy should change.

Repeated infection is a reason to look deeper.

The goal is not simply to prescribe another antibiotic.

The goal is to determine whether there is:

A prostate problem

Incomplete bladder emptying

A urinary stone

Urethral narrowing

Bladder dysfunction

Prostatitis

Another urinary tract abnormality

Finding and treating the underlying problem may be the key to reducing repeated infections.

Why See a Urologist for Recurrent UTI?

Choosing the right evaluation becomes particularly important when urinary infections keep returning.

At Dr. Mohamed Soliman Elrefaey’s Urology Clinic, patients with recurrent urinary symptoms can be assessed for the possible causes behind repeated infections, including prostate problems, urinary stones, urinary obstruction, bladder-emptying difficulties, and other urological conditions.

The aim is not simply to treat the current symptoms, but to understand why they are happening and whether there is an underlying condition that needs treatment.

The clinic provides evaluation and management for a range of urological conditions, including:

Recurrent urinary tract infections

<li data-section-id="1m4vjjv" tract symptoms

Male sexual and reproductive health conditions

Are Your Urinary Infections Coming Back?

If you keep experiencing burning urination, urgency, frequent urination, pelvic discomfort, or repeated infections, don’t keep treating the same symptoms without finding out why they are returning.

A proper urological evaluation can help determine the cause and guide the appropriate treatment.

<p cause of your recurrent urinary problems.

Your next antibiotic may treat the NICE recommends specialist urological assessment for men with recurrent UTI to help identify the underlying reason for recurrence.

Can an enlarged prostate cause recurrent UTI?

It can contribute to recurrent urinary infections when prostate enlargement interferes with normal urine flow or complete bladder emptying.

Can kidney stones cause recurrent urinary infections?

Urinary stones can sometimes contribute to infection or obstruction, so they may need to be considered when infections repeatedly occur without an obvious cause.

Is burning urination always a urinary infection?

No. Burning can also occur with prostatitis, urethritis, sexually transmitted infections, urinary stones, and other conditions.

Can recurrent UTI affect the kidneys?

Some urinary infections can spread to the upper urinary tract and cause kidney infection. Fever, chills, flank pain, or significant illness should be assessed promptly.

Should I take the same antibiotic every time?

No. Antibiotics should not be repeatedly taken without medical assessment. The appropriate treatment depends on the diagnosis, clinical situation, and sometimes urine culture results.

A urinary tract infection may start with something that seems minor: burning when you urinate, frequent trips to the bathroom, urgency, pelvic discomfort, or changes in urine.
